Update from Notes for Writers

A change is coming

Hi Writer,

I’m humbled you signed-up to receive a weekly rundown of help for writers. But today I have some bad news. This email is the last Notes for Writers.

If you’ve ever started a business, you know it takes many adjustments to get things right. And there are some tweaks I need to make to grow my practice. Unfortunately, one of those changes is ceasing Notes for Writers. While I want to help my fellow writers, this weekly email isn’t the best use of my time.

Which brings me to the next steps: I’m rolling out a blog and newsletter that supports my practice. If content marketing and freelance writing is your thing, I’d love it if you subscribed. That’s not the newsletter you signed up for, so I’m not going to automatically subscribe you to it. But you can join on my website.

Lastly, let’s stay in touch through social media. The links are below.

Thanks for being there,
Nick

The best writing advice, tips, and gigs of the week

Hi Writer,

This email is brought you entirely from my iPhone. No, this isn’t an Apple ad. It’s the FML of my week. My computer is getting repaired this week, so I’m working using my iPhone. It’s not great.

But there’s a lesson here. We’re capable of accomplishing more than we think. A freelance writer without a computer is as useful as decaf coffee. Yet, I wrote a lot and got newsletters out the door as planned.

So, whenever life takes your computer, make lemonade. Or something like that.

Thanks for reading,
Nick

P.S. I got my laptop back late yesterday. This was me before I did. 👇

Could you do me a favor and share this email with others? Thank you!

The best writing advice, tweets, and gigs of the week

Hi Writer,

Do people ask you how things are going with your writing? It’s been a month of full-time freelancing and it seems every friend and contact asks me how it’s going. Authors probably get asked how their book is coming along. And poets probably wish someone asked about their poetry.

What do you say? After all, success is subjective. A New York Times best-selling author can still be filled with doubt and insecurity. And it’s a law of nature that a freelance writer will never think they’re earning enough money.

That’s why this week’s GIF is inspired by how I respond to the question, “How’s it going?” What do you say when you’re asked about your writing?

Thanks for reading,
Nick

New This Week

Most of my writing’s been on client work (see above, “Fine GIF”), but I did publish a review of Rebecca Makkai’s The Great Believers.

The best writing tips, guides, and gigs of the week

Happy Valentine’s Day, Writers,

Do you celebrate it? Growing up, mom made my brother and me heart-shaped pancakes for breakfast every Valentine’s Day. She did this even if the holiday fell on a weekday. I do not know how you mothers do it.

So this Valentine’s Day to all you writing moms. Being a mother and a writer may be the most challenging, but hopefully rewarding, things you do.

Thanks for being both,
Nick

The best writing tips, guides, and gigs of the week

Hi Writers,

I put more effort this week into finding writing gigs. These are the most-clicked links each week. So, expect more job posts going forward.

Under Calls and Contests, I’ve started bolding the new additions. Since this is a rolling list, it can be hard to know what you’ve already seen. Hopefully, making the new entries standout will help.

Lastly, if you find this weekly email helpful, would you mind sharing it with others? You can do so with a quick tap on the button below. Thank you!

Till next week,
Nick
